How Much Does SEO Cost in Houston?

Three SEO plan cards with rising prices next to a growth arrow

SEO in Houston is paid for in two parts: an optional one-time setup, then a monthly fee for ongoing work. At SEO Kettle, setup is $900 one-time, and monthly plans run $500 (Starter), $900 (Growth), $1,500 (Authority) and $2,500+ (Custom). Other agencies and freelancers price differently, so the useful question is not "what is the average?" but "what do I get for the money, and what does my market require?"

This guide explains what you are paying for, what pushes the price up or down, and how to compare quotes without getting burned.

What you are paying for

SEO is not one task. A monthly fee usually covers a mix of these:

  • Strategy and keyword research. Finding the searches your customers actually use, such as "AC repair Katy" or "personal injury lawyer Houston", and mapping each one to a page.
  • Technical work. Speed, indexing, mobile layout, broken links, sitemaps and structured data, so Google can read and trust the site.
  • Content. New service pages, location pages and blog posts, plus improvements to the pages you already have.
  • Local SEO. Google Business Profile optimization, reviews strategy, citations and map pack work. See local SEO in Houston.
  • Authority building. Local links, mentions and directory listings that show Google your business is real and respected.
  • AI search visibility. Making your business easy for ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to find and describe. See AI SEO in Houston.
  • Reporting. Rankings, traffic, calls and leads, so you can see what the money is doing.

When a quote is very cheap, one or more of these is usually missing or done at a token level. Ask which ones are included.

Common ways SEO is priced

Monthly retainer. The most common model. You pay the same amount each month for a defined scope. It suits SEO because results build over months.

One-time project. An audit, a site setup or a cleanup with a fixed price and a fixed end. Good for getting a foundation in place or for a second opinion.

Hourly consulting. Useful for advice or a specific question, but hard to budget for ongoing work.

Performance-based pricing. Paying only for rankings or leads sounds safe, but nobody controls Google. Be careful with anyone who ties their fee to a guaranteed position.

What changes the price

The same monthly budget buys different results in different markets. These are the main factors:

  1. Competition. Ranking for "roof repair Houston" is harder than ranking for a narrow service in a smaller niche. More competition means more content and more authority work.
  2. Number of services and locations. Each service and each area you want to rank in usually needs its own page. Five services across four areas is a lot more work than one service in one city.
  3. Current state of the site. A site with technical problems, thin pages or no tracking needs a heavier first few months.
  4. Content volume. Publishing four pages a month costs more than optimizing one.
  5. Link and mention building. Earning real local mentions takes outreach and time.
  6. Speed of growth. Faster growth in a tough market needs more hours.
  7. Your Google Business Profile. A new or suspended profile needs more work than an established one.

What each SEO Kettle plan covers

You can see everything on the pricing page. In short:

  • SEO Setup, $900 one-time. An audit and 90-day plan for an existing website, or a basic SEO setup for a new one: tracking, sitemap, schema, keyword mapping and a launch checklist. It is not a monthly fee.
  • Starter, $500 a month. A local SEO foundation: Google Business Profile optimization, keyword mapping, on-page work, citation cleanup, one page optimized per month and a monthly report. It fits small local businesses in less competitive markets.
  • Growth, $900 a month. Everything in Starter plus two to three pages a month, competitor analysis, review strategy, link building, AI search monitoring and a monthly strategy call. It fits service businesses competing in Houston.
  • Authority, $1,500 a month. Everything in Growth plus four to six pages a month, advanced technical and schema work, digital PR, entity optimization and bi-weekly calls. It fits competitive markets.
  • Custom, $2,500+ a month. Multi-location and high-competition work with a custom roadmap.

All plans are month-to-month, and AI search visibility is part of every plan.

How long before it pays off

SEO is slower than ads. Most businesses spend the first one to three months on setup, fixes and new pages, and results usually build after that. Timing depends on competition, the age of your site and how much you publish. Nobody can promise a specific ranking or a date, and anyone who does is guessing.

Here is a simple way to judge whether a plan makes sense. This is an example with made-up numbers, not a promise:

  • Your average job is worth $600.
  • One in four leads becomes a paying customer.
  • A plan at $900 a month needs roughly six extra leads a month to bring in $900 in new work (6 leads, 1.5 customers, $900).

Put your own numbers in. If the math only works with unrealistic lead counts, pick a smaller plan or fix your conversion first.

Red flags in an SEO quote

  • A guaranteed #1 ranking. Google does not sell rankings and no agency controls them.
  • No reporting. You should see rankings, traffic, calls and leads every month.
  • No access to your accounts. You should own your Google Business Profile, Search Console and Analytics.
  • Vague deliverables. "SEO services" with no list of what is done each month.
  • Link packages. Buying bulk links can get a site penalized.
  • Long lock-in contracts. If the work is good, you will stay without a 12-month contract.
  • Secret methods. A good SEO explains what they are doing and why.

Questions to ask before you hire

  1. What exactly will you do each month, and how many pages will you write or improve?
  2. Which reports do I get, and how often?
  3. Do I own all the accounts and the content?
  4. How do you handle Google Business Profile and reviews?
  5. How do you approach AI search visibility?
  6. Is there a contract, and how do I cancel?
  7. Who actually does the work, and can I talk to them directly?

What the first 90 days usually look like

Month one is mostly groundwork: tracking, a technical review, keyword mapping and fixes to the Google Business Profile. Month two is where new and improved pages start going live, and citations and reviews work picks up speed. By month three you should see early signals, such as more impressions in Search Console, more profile views and the first movement on target searches. Calls and leads usually come after that. If someone shows you only rankings and no calls or leads, ask what the work is doing for your phone and your inbox.

How to compare two quotes side by side

Two quotes can look similar and hide very different work. Put them in a simple list and check each line:

  • Pages per month. How many pages are written or improved, and who writes them?
  • Local work. Is the Google Business Profile, review strategy and citation work included, or extra?
  • Technical work. Is there an audit, and who fixes what it finds?
  • AI search. Is it included, and what exactly is done?
  • Reporting and calls. How often do you hear from them?
  • Contract terms. Month-to-month or locked in?

If one quote is half the price, find the lines that are missing. Sometimes the lower price is fair for a smaller scope. Sometimes it is a template.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cheap SEO package worth it?

It can be if the scope is clear and honest. Low prices often mean automated reports, copied content or bulk links. Compare what is delivered, not only the price.

Do I need the setup before a monthly plan?

Not always. The setup is most useful for new websites and for sites that have no tracking, no sitemap or unknown technical problems. If your site is already in good shape, you can start with Starter or Growth.

Can I cancel any time?

On our plans, yes. They are month-to-month with no long-term contract.

Does the price include ads?

No. SEO and paid ads are separate. Ad spend goes to Google, not to an SEO provider.
